The 93-minute sci-fi comedy premieres August 15 on AIMV Saturday Night Movies, launching a multi-platform rollout that will include YouTube, Spotify video, Blu-ray and continued efforts toward wider distribution and theatrical exhibition.
August 15, 2026, Los Angeles, Calif. — Magic Engine Studios today announced the world premiere of Astro Cats: The Movie, the new 93-minute sci-fi comedy created by generative movie maker Brian James Gage.
The movie premieres tonight, August 15 at 7:00 PM PST / 10:00 PM EST as a special one-time engagement on AIMV Saturday Night Movies via Alchemy Stream, available on Apple TV and Roku.
The premiere marks the beginning of a broader rollout for Astro Cats. Following its one-time AIMV engagement, the full movie will be released on YouTube, followed later this month by a Spotify video release through one of Magic Engine Studios’ distribution partners.
A collector Blu-ray collector's edition will be released August 20, while the Astro Cats original motion picture soundtrack is available now on Spotify and Apple Music.
Magic Engine Studios is also working with its distribution partners on opportunities for wider release across additional platforms, while continuing efforts toward theatrical exhibition.
“Astro Cats represents exactly the kind of project we want Magic Engine Studios to champion,” said Debbi Berlin, CEO of Magic Engine Studios. “It’s an original property, it takes creative risks, and now we’re building multiple ways for audiences to discover it. Tonight’s premiere is really the beginning. From streaming and physical media to music and our efforts toward theatrical exhibition, we want to see how far we can take this movie.”
Created entirely by Gage using the Magic Engine pipeline, Astro Cats: The Movie was created from concept to final cut in 118 days. It's a feature-length gonzo sci-fi comedy following an unlikely crew of spacefaring cats on an interstellar adventure combining comedy, action, and cosmic absurdity spoofing everything from Kubrick's 2001, Apocalypse Now, Goodfellas, and The Empire Strikes Back.
The movie was created using an emerging generative production workflow encompassing visual production, animation, sound, music and post-production. For Gage, however, the technology remains secondary to the finished experience.
“The objective was never to make a 93-minute technology demonstration,” said Brian James Gage, Generative Director and Chief Creative Officer of Magic Engine Studios. “It was to make a movie. I wanted characters you remember, a world that feels much bigger than its production circumstances, and something genuinely entertaining. How we made it is certainly part of the story, but the movie has to work when all of that disappears and the audience is simply watching Astro Cats.”
The release is Magic Engine's 5th feature film created in 11 months. It also reflects Magic Engine Studios’ larger strategy of treating independently produced generative movies as expandable entertainment properties rather than isolated online releases.
In addition to the feature itself, Astro Cats has expanded into an original soundtrack, physical collector media and other extensions of the property, while Magic Engine Studios continues conversations with distribution partners about bringing the movie to additional audiences.
“We believe independent creators now have an opportunity to think much bigger about what they make and how they bring it to market,” Berlin said. “The tools are changing rapidly, but distribution, audience building and creating something people actually want to watch still matter. Astro Cats gives us an opportunity to put all of those pieces together.”
